Volksmarch pins and awards  of the 8th Infantry Division
A  volksmarch is a traditional German non-competitive sport in which participants walk a course (generally 6-10 kilometers). It is supposed to be friendly and jovial atmosphere (with many sips of alcoholic beverages shared along the way).  At the conclusion the participants normally get some small souvenir such as a patch, badge, or pin. The U.S. realized that these were not only a means of good exercise, but a way to make friends with the local Germans. A number of 8th ID volksmarches were done during the division's time in Germany, and many of the march badges had 8th ID insignia on them.
