William G. Weaver (Commander December 1944 – February 1945 |
Maj. Gen. William Gaulbert Weaver (1988 - 1970)Born in Kentucky, General Weaver graduated fromt he U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1912. Commisioned in the Infantry, he served in France as a Major in WW1 where he was wounded, and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He was honerably discharged in 1919 returning to civllian life but maintaining a reserve commision. Returning to servcie for WW2 he was promoted to full colonel in July 1942. He served in the European theater from 1942 through 1945. On 31 July 1944 he was promoted to Assistant Division Commander of the 90th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster to his DSC for his inspiring and heroic leadership at le Bourg-St.-Leonard on 17 August 1944 (at theFalaise Pocket). In December 1944 the was promotoed to commander of the 8th Infantry Division. He held that position he held until February 1945 when he was wounded and had to be medically evacuated from the unit. He was medically retired in 1946 having been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Commendation Ribbon, and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. General Weaver passed away in 1970. |
