In 1950-53 the 8th ID was stationed at Fort Jackson South Carolina. At the time it was known as the 8th Infantry (Training) Division as the division had been reactivated on 17 August 1950 and was being used as a replacement training unit. Its mission was to train both enlistees and selectee (men who were drafted) to be used as a replacement in a combat division. As a training unit the division was not at full strength. Only specific companies or batteries were active to process the recruits. Training was started in companies at staggered times so that there would be a constant flow of trained men every month.

In March 1953 the units starting training were:

  •  Companies E, G and H of the13th Infantry Regiment

  • Companies F,K, and L of the 28th Infantry Regiment

  • Companies C, D and E of the 61st Infantry Regiment

  • Service Battery of the 28th Field Artillery Battalion

  • Battery A of the 43rd Field Artillery Battalion

  • Service Battery of the 45th Field Artillery Battalion
